2013 Symposium
The Institute for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at Mount Royal University is pleased to announce its fourth annual Symposium on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, being held in Banff, Alberta Canada from November 7 - 9, 2013.

Call for Proposals (CFP)

2012 Proposals

Please be advised that that proposal submission period has ended.

The 2013 Symposium will take place November 7 - 9, 2013 in Banff, Alberta Canada. It is a practitioners conference dedicated to developing teaching and learning research, sharing nascent findings, going public with results of completed projects, and building an extended scholarly community.

Proposals will be accepted from individual scholars or teams of scholars committed to presenting their work in one of two venues:

  1. Sixty-minute concurrent session presentations will provide individuals or teams of scholars the opportunity to go public with research and work-in-progress in a formal setting. Typically these sessions are interactive and concurrent session rooms will be provided with a computer, video projector, and screen.
  2. One ninety-minute poster session providing individuals or teams of scholars the opportunity to go public with research and work-in-progress in an informal, conversational setting. Posters must be no larger than 3’x4’ and will be displayed on portable easels during the Friday evening Scholars Reception.

All proposals, for concurrent session presentations or posters, must identify one of the following categories:

  • Completed teaching and learning research – a going public session designed to share results of completed investigations, the goal is to expand the impact of compelling research results;
  • Early returns and initial findings of work in progress – an opportunity for researchers who have completed data gathering but are still in the process of analysis to receive constructive and critical feedback - the goal is to provide initial review and thoughtful support for ongoing research;
  • Calls for collaboration, triangulation, and development – a venue for sharing early-stage research questions in the hope of building connections with like-minded individuals - the goal is to expand scholarly capacity and the likelihood of more significant results across a broader community;
  • Innovative approaches to data gathering and analysis – an “in progress” or going public session focused on method of data gathering and/or analytical methodology - the goal is to provide insight into the fine grained work of evidence-building in the hope of expanding investigative innovation;
  • Meta-level studies and contributions to future scholarship – a way for scholars to share questions, data, or circumstances beyond the scope of single-course-based research that contributes to future scholarship of teaching and learning - the goal is a wider view of question posing, data use, and collaboration;
  • Institutional/Program support and development – an opportunity for representatives from centres, institutes, programs, societies, etc. to share work that fosters and supports teaching and learning scholarship - the goal is to expand our community and share innovations, insights, and information.

Proposals will be accepted from students, faculty, staff, administrators, or anyone else committed to systematic scholarly inquiry. All proposals require a title, abstract, and bibliography. Presentations will feature individual scholars, teams of scholars, panels of scholars, and program or institutional representatives. All proposals will be read by at least three experienced reviewers.

The deadline for submitting proposals was Monday, September 23, 2013. For additional information please contact the Institute for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at sotlinstitute@mtroyal.ca or 403.440.5503.
